Simple explanation
The Second World War in Europe ended in 1945 after Nazi Germany’s defeat. Germany was occupied by the Allied powers and later divided into two states: the Federal Republic of Germany in the west and the German Democratic Republic in the east.
Understanding this period helps explain later institutions, remembrance culture, the Cold War division of Europe and the significance of reunification.
