Simple explanation
The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 by East German authorities and became a major symbol of Germany’s division and the Cold War. It restricted movement from East Berlin and East Germany toward West Berlin.
The Wall opened on 9 November 1989 amid peaceful political change. German reunification followed on 3 October 1990, which is now celebrated as the Day of German Unity.
